What do you think?

Do you have a story about your chapter?

What about your Sewanee experience makes you want to take part in the Summit?

Can you share information that might be helpful to other advisors?

Sewanee's Kappa Alpha Order said...

If you had driven down University Avenue on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago, you would have seen a group of young men hard at work on the front lawn of the Kappa Alpha house. KAs living in Sewanee for the summer and members willing to come for the weekend and help out were trimming trees and improving their property. While it may be extraordinary to see college students doing much of anything on a Sunday afternoon, the KAs have spent the last semester improving their house, their chapter and their organization.

In January 2011, Sewanee’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Order was under threat of losing its charter. As the largest fraternity on campus, KA Alumni were unwilling to allow more than 125 years of tradition to come to a screeching halt. An Alumni Advisory Board of 25 with ten mentors was quickly established, hours were spent on conference calls, an Alumnus mentor was assigned to each Active Officer, goals were set, and a semester plan was developed that included Alumni participating on campus several times monthly.

Although a KA House Corporation existed prior to this year, this new Alumni Advisory Board was given the responsibility by National KA to run the chapter. Working with some highly committed officers, the Actives responded to the issues and successfully implemented a restructuring. Ritual and leadership have again become the chapter’s top priorities. They have capitalized on old traditions and hosted a tea for professors and friends at their house in the Spring.

The Kappa Alphas are a fine group of young men, and their ability to meet challenges and solve problems with assistance from Alumni have set an exceptional example. Credit must be given to the leadership of the KA Actives and with a Fall semester plan in place, the Advisory Board is positioned to maintain support, as autonomy is returned to the Actives later this year.

I'm looking forward to attending the Greek Alumni Summit. Thanks for the valuable and succinct question crt. Congratulations to Sewanee's Kappa Alpha Chapter. You set a good example for us all. While the big news for Beta has been the purchase of and long overdue physical renovation of the Beta House, I'm joined by alumni and actives that believe this will be a year of continued revitalization of the chapter's greatest capital - the spirit of service and dedication among the men of our brotherhood. YSR!

Interesting article http://chronicle.com/article/As-They-Try-to-Rein-In/128834/

Higher education needs us to offer a model system. After this weekend, I believe that it is possible. It was great to welcome 140 Greek alumni back to the Mountain. Thank you for caring.
